This book was created to develop and advance the game of football through developing talents of players, by training them leading edge playing skills and tactics that would deliberately improve their individual brilliancy in games and level of their strategic competitiveness, using a new innovative training approach provided in this book.

Modern Art football (MAF) is a form of football game brought forward to advance the generic standard of playing the traditional game internationally, from academy level to club level.

Given that there is a difference between a player being talented and one being skilled and knowledgeable, the training package is doomed to mainly offer advanced tactical skills training and relevant knowledge to players, as a specialized area for their talent development.

One greatly fundamental component of the book is that it covers many important playing skills, and as well provides a comprehensive training mode consisting of training sessions and basic drills used to effectively help players comprehend and learn skills, for the progression and systematic implementation of modern Art football.

Background

The training guide was written by Ronald Tebandeke, a football skills coach, under the Twenty 1st Century soccer Foundation. The Foundation was found in 2011 with an aim to develop the football sport, through player talent development and specifically their playing skills development.

The book introduces a term known as Modern Art football, which is a form of football game incorporated with modern playing skills, that is intended to reconstitute and out do traditional football. Traditional football is a form of football game played by players to simply compete, but is less skills oriented.

Significance of modern art football

Modern art football is a term used to refer to advanced football, and deliberately draw a line between the new game and the old fashioned traditional game, so as to allow transition in the style of playing the sport at a generic standard.

Modern art football was also created to support in the talent development of the new generation of young players, and help in achieving a new world of well skilled, talented, and knowledgeable professional football players, through creating an augmented player skills development baseline to be employed internationally.

Significantly, in Modern Art football as trained  in this book, there are new highly effective playing skills and tactics brought forward to allow a more efficient and progressive game played by players, which are fundamentally helpful to be trained to them to foster more of their competitiveness in games.

The guide is noticeably helpful to all levels of football players right from a newly starting academy (of kids above 8 years) to the best club in the world of professional football, especially to allow them diversify their playing approaches to fit in the evolutionary model of playing the game. Effective enough is that the guide does not interfere with established playing strategies of teams, but focuses on basically fortifying strategies of coordination, possession, attacking and scoring tactics.

Significant trends pertinent to Modern Art football

Possession based football

This is a game that involves strategic team and individual ball possession tactics and strategic defensive and offense approaches with the ball. As a trending style, this game is currently used by many teams around the world as part of their overall playing tactics due to its resultant performance and functionality in games. It is used in the attacking and possessive game, for the overall tactics used by some of the best teams around the world, such as Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain, AC Roma, etc, and using styles like tik tak style and total football.

Better than direct football, possession based football allows more chances for strategic attacking and defensive approach, ball protection, and a team’s ability to dominate games and maintain a lead (since if you can’t maintain a lead you can’t make a win).

What is Modern Art football?

This is a form of playing the football game which involves high level of strategic approach, techniques on ball, playing intelligence, and possession game mechanisms.

What is traditional football?

This is a form of playing the football game largely used around the world  (being an old style),  which involves direct attacking approach, with commonly long passes on a ball, man to man playing approach, and high aggression of play. It was very useful in the old days of playing the sport, with high effect of successfulness especially when it came to scoring quick goals. However, today the competitive nature of playing the game has changed. Teams now use strong possession tactics to keep the ball away from opponents and also reach an extent of retaining it in the opposition team’s playing section and split their defense to score goals in a challenging manner. This is just an example to show that the game has taken a new path of competitiveness, where more art, technique, strategies, playing intelligence, and game comprehension is required in depth.

Traditional football is a game where commonly losing the ball to the opponents or outside the pitch and making blind passes or blind shots on goal is normal.

Modern Art football is a game where losing the ball to your opponent is restricted and considered a much bigger threat. Losing the ball would be compared to losing breathe, and fighting to repossess it would be like struggling to get out of a stifled room. So it would be like a player’s whole life depends on the ball, asserting that there is totally no time to use it poorly. This stipulates that ultimate playing accuracy and ball possession skills are key measures for keeping the necessary playing standard.

Modern Art football clearly eliminates unnecessary common playing aspects which are normalized in traditional football, which include;

  1. Fighting on ball
  2. Delaying with the ball by a player
  3. Frequent loss of the ball possession to opponents
  4. Frequent unnecessary loss of the ball across the touchline of the pitch perimeter (without any tactical purpose)
  5. Unnecessary individualism with the ball. So team work is essential
  6. Poor ball control, which leads to the overall playing standards of a team to below. And so forth

Modern Art football rather brings forth and revamps important playing aspects such as;

  1. Tactical coordination and team work
  2. Ball protection and control
  3. Use of speed
  4. Body balance with the ball
  5. Passing and scoring ball techniques
  6. Quick reaction
  7. Timing on ball and timing of the opponents
  8. Ball possession
  9. Unpredictability
  10. Playing space awareness
  11. Playing intelligence
  12. Playing skills and knowledge to equip to players so as to improve their individual brilliancy in games. etc
